Urostomy Bags

A urostomy involves diverting urine through a stoma when the bladder has been blocked or removed. This is usually a permanent solution, and more common than most people might think. You will have to use a urostomy bag to collect your urine, but other than that, normal functions work as you've always been used to (if not better!).

Urostomy bags come in several kinds. Because kidney function is of the utmost importance to you after you've had this procedure, protecting them is most urostomates' main concern. Typically, kidneys are prone to infection because of urine backing up into them. Urine is full of bacteria that can harm the kidneys, so you must prevent this back flow at all times.

Doing this is simple. Most urostomy bags are made with an anti-reflux valve to stop back flow issues. As well, night-use bags are designed with a tube to drain the bag as you sleep so that urine doesn't sit on your stoma and go back into your system.

Beyond these concerns, urostomy bags are similar to other ostomy bags. They can be drainable or disposable, and they can come in one-piece or two-piece systems, depending on which you prefer. Always be sure to keep you stoma and the area around it free from dirt and waste, and you'll be fine! For more helpful tips, visit our website at www.sgvmedical.com.
