Ileostomy Care

After an ileostomy procedure, there are several things to keep in mind in regards to ileostomy care. First, you will have to now wear an external pouch to collect the waste from your intestines. Gratefully, though, these pouches have been streamlined over the years and are virtually invisible under your clothing. As well, they are made with odor-blocking layers and hypoallergenic adhesives for a snug, non-irritating fit.

Other aspects of ileostomy care include diet and exercise. Some people find that the food you eat may be harder to digest after an ileostomy. For example, fiber-rich foods like potato skins or raw vegetables may cause blockages or some discomfort when trying to move them through your stoma. To help prevent this issues, chewing food thoroughly is a good idea.

As well, gas and diarrhea may increase in occurrence in people who've had an ileostomy. However, this is usually no worse than before your surgery and can actually improve over time in most cases. Other complications can include gallstones and kidney stones, but this is rare too. Usually, your doctor can inform you what your individual risks are based on your given situation, so don't be afraid to ask questions.

Exercise is also important. Just because you have to wear an external pouch doesn't mean that you life is limited. There are special mini pouches for swimming and caps for pouches that also make them water proof. At SGV Medical Supplies, we carry all of these products and more, plus lots of helpful tips on living with an ileostomy.
